Recently Updated Updated on 2024-10-13

Having trouble accessing your Windows user account through RDP? Follow these steps to fix it quickly.

Step 1: Fix the Lockout

Method 1: Wait It Out

Many systems automatically unlock accounts after a set time, typically 15–30 minutes. If you're not in a rush, you can wait for the account to unlock.

Method 2: Manual Unlock

To manually unlock the account, follow these steps:

  1. Log in using an administrator account.
  2. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.
  3. Right-click the locked user's account and select Properties.
  4. Uncheck "Account is locked out" under the Account tab.

Step 2: Adjust Lockout Policies

If lockouts keep happening, adjusting the account lockout policy will help reduce the frequency.

  1. Open Group Policy Editor (run gpedit.msc).
  2. Navigate to:
  3. Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Account Policies > Account Lockout Policy
  4. Adjust these settings:
    • Account lockout threshold: Number of failed login attempts before locking the account.
    • Account lockout duration: How long the account remains locked before auto-unlocking.
    • Reset account lockout counter: Time before the failed attempts counter resets.
